1️⃣ What the GPSR is

The GPSR is the General Product Safety Regulation of the European Union. Its purpose is to strengthen the safety of products offered to consumers in the EU, both online and offline.

This regulation replaces the previous directive on general product safety and sets obligations for economic operators and marketplaces.

You can check the full regulation on EUR-Lex.

2️⃣ Which products it applies to

The GPSR generally applies to products offered to consumers in the EU. This includes new, refurbished, used or repaired products.

It does not apply to the following categories:

  • Medicinal products.
  • Food and feed.
  • Living plants or animals.
  • Animal by-products.
  • Plant protection products.
  • Transport equipment operated by a service provider.
  • Aircraft.
  • Antiques.
  • Products clearly marked as needing repair or reconditioning before use.
Keep in mind: if you are not sure whether a specific product is affected by the regulation, review the applicable regulation or seek specialist advice before offering it for sale.
3️⃣ What information you must provide

You must provide the information needed to identify the manufacturer or, if the manufacturer is not established in the EU, the responsible person in the EU.

  • Responsible person in the EU: if the manufacturer is not established in the EU, you must provide the details of the responsible person, importer or authorised representative in the EU, where applicable.
  • Safety information: warnings, instructions or documentation related to product safety when necessary.
  • Language understandable to the consumer: the information must be provided in a language easily understood by consumers in the country where the product is marketed.
